Sweet Alchemy is a plant-based (vegan) bakery and cafe creating scrumptious treats and conscious eats for all to enjoy.

Everything we cook and bake is vegan and many things are made without gluten.

We offer breakfast and lunch, baked gluten-free and gluten-full treats, espresso drinks, smoothies and house-made prepared foods (including cookie dough and our beloved curries!) for you to bring home with you. Everything here is made scrupulously from scratch, from vibrant sauces to daily pastries like our maple-glazed donuts, cinnamon rolls, whoopie pies and a beloved pineapple rosemary upside down cake. We make some of the best darn gluten free/vegan baked goods around, and that’s a fact! Besides our storefront our baked goods can be found here.

Our food offerings are made with an insistence on excellence and simplicity to elevate humble vegetables and grains into surprisingly delicious dishes. We believe that eating fresh, clean and thoughtfully prepared  foods have a huge impact on our health both physically and mentally. We are committed to doing the best we can at every stage of the process of bringing you a nourishing meal.

We love being transparent and talking the integrity of the preparation of our food. Curious about allergens or other info? Read our FAQ page. Want to know where your veggies came from any given day? Just ask!

We’re an eatery for everyone.

Why Vegan

We like to believe we are a one stop shop! We craft our menu from plants and create many allergen-friendly treats and eats. By focusing on plant foods and a lot of gluten free ingredients we can be accessible to a broad range of folks (egg allergies! soy allergies! gluten intolerances!)that are often not catered to without skipping some of the flavor or fun. We are confident you can find something on our menu to satisfy you or anyone in your group regardless of their dietary preference. It is truly a privilege to be nourishing folks with good foods and it delights us to make high quality and nutrient dense offerings that are accessible to so many.

Organic Ingredients

We use nearly 100% organic and non GMO ingredients. We source our potatoes, carrots, cabbage, winter squashes, sweet potatoes, all purpose flour, black beans, wheat flour wraps, corn tortillas and tofu locally and/or organically year round except for the occasional gaps between the end of the storage crops and the new harvests! Our greens, broccoli, tomatoes, herbs and cucumbers come from either our own garden or local organic farms when in season, and out of season from organic farms nationwide. We use only 100% organic oils, seeds, nuts, legumes, chocolate, gluten free flours, frozen and fresh fruits, nut milks, maple syrup and teas. Our coffee is ethically sourced but not all organically certified.

Consciousness

We believe at the heart of everything is our consciousness. It has the power to transform any simple act into something of value. To be conscious is to be paying attention. It’s commonly acknowledged now that “You are what you eat.” and we like to take that a step deeper to the subtle level of who is preparing your food and how. Being present and intentional has a powerful effect on what we are creating. We are convinced that what we cultivate inside ourselves is transferred through the work that we do and thus to you. We hope that you can feel the difference.

A few things that make Sweet Alchemy oh-so extra special.

Grown by us

During the growing season, we harvest much of the fresh ingredients that go into our food from our on site garden. We are more of a yard-to-table kind of restaurant in July-September and are super proud of that! As of 2022 we source approximately 25% of our ingredients directly from farmers and producers and another 50% comes from local distributors that work with farmers in Vermont and further afield. We are dedicated to sourcing as much of our menu as possible from local growers and producers despite the many hurdles we jump through the changing seasons and current supply chain issues.

International Influence

We make unexpected foods you can’t easily find such as vegan and gluten-free versions of classic Indian dishes and allergen friendly versions of beloved baked good. We draw on our collective backgrounds of being raised in or living in other parts of the world to add a flare to the style of cooking we offer. You might find savory masala dosa’s on offering or a special dahl and rice plate in between our beloved breakfast burrito and kale salad that are menu staples. Our co-owner, and South Indian raised chef extraordinaire, Kunja is always scheming up new things to sneak into the weeks offerings. You don’t want to miss dosa days! Fun fact, we don’t use alliums (onion or garlic family) in anything we cook because neither Kunja nor I were raised cooking with them. It’s yet another small thing that sets us apart and makes our menu available to those that can’t eat these either for health or religious reasons!

Meaningful Employment

A core value and goal from the inception of this place was to pay folks living wages and to offer meaningful  employment. We believe that all work should be treated as skilled labor and be received with respect and dignity no matter the job description. What we do, we should do with love. There is no measurement of relative value when our hearts are fully present with our work. We are only as strong as our team is happy and healthy in what they are doing. We offer paid time off to full time employees(and plan to add other benefits by 2023) and embrace a workplace that allows for all of us to take trips and have time off to recharge and explore our other passions! As our business grows, we evolve what we can offer those that are working with us and look forward to continually upping our game in this crucial area.

The quality of what we make is due to such high quality local farmers and producers

All Souls Tortilleria, Vermont Bean Crafters, Pumpkin Village Foods, Vermont Soy, Lewis Creek Farm, Jericho Settlers Farm, Pitchfork Pickle, Rugged Ridge Forest, Laughing Child Farm, Black River Produce and Paradiso Coffee.
